WHAT TO DO IN YOUR KITCHEN GARDEN IN AUGUST
August is a bountiful month as many of your crops will be ready to harvest. The biggest issues this month will be keeping everything suitably watered and well fed and then dealing with any gluts!
If you find yourself with more fruits and veggies then you can give away then consider pickling them or turning them into jam.
JOBS LIST
- Prune fruit trees like plums, apples and pears.
- Cut down the stems of summer fruiting raspberries.
- Keep an eye out for diseases.
- Continue weeding.
- Keep watering!
- Make plans for looking after the garden while you’re on holiday.
PLANT NOW
In August you want to focus on planting the things you’d like to harvest in Autumn and beyond. Plan things like:
- chicory
- lamb’s lettuce
- lettuce
- mizuna
- mustard leaf
- overwintering onion
- radish
- rocket
- spring onion
- spring cabbage
- turnips
HARVEST NOW
If you thought your July harvest was good, just look at all the wonderful things you can harvest in August. Your harvest might include:
- Aubergines
- Beetroot
- Broccoli
- Cabbage
- Cauliflower
- Carrots
- Celery
- Chard
- Courgette
- Cucumbers
- Fennel
- French beans, Runner beans and Broad beans
- Lettuce and other salad leaves
- Mange tout
- Peas
- Peppers
- Tomatoes
- Spring onions
- Summer Squash
- Sweetcorn
- Apples
- Blackberries
- Blackcurrants, Redcurrants and Whitecurrants
- Blueberries
- Cherries
- Figs
- Gooseberries
