In my “Grow Your Own month-by-month” series I will share with you a handy to do list, a list of fruits and vegetables you can harvest and a list of fruits and vegetables you can plant for that specific month.

WHAT TO DO IN YOUR KITCHEN GARDEN IN AUGUST

August is a bountiful month as many of your crops will be ready to harvest. The biggest issues this month will be keeping everything suitably watered and well fed and then dealing with any gluts!

If you find yourself with more fruits and veggies then you can give away then consider pickling them or turning them into jam.

JOBS LIST

  • Prune fruit trees like plums, apples and pears.
  • Cut down the stems of summer fruiting raspberries.
  • Keep an eye out for diseases.
  • Continue weeding.
  • Keep watering!
  • Make plans for looking after the garden while you're on holiday.

PLANT NOW

In August you want to focus on planting the things you'd like to harvest in Autumn and beyond. Plan things like:

  • chicory
  • lamb's lettuce

  • radish
  • rocket
  • spring onion
  • spring cabbage
