Grow Your Own In March

Grow Your Own In March

In my “Grow Your Own month-by-month” series I will share with you a handy to do list, a list of fruits and vegetables you can harvest and a list of fruits and vegetables you can plant for that specific month.

What to do in your Kitchen Garden in March

March is a funny old month, it can go from cold to positively tropical in the space of a few days which can leave you a little confused. What I do know is that Spring has arrived and it all gets better from here.

Jobs list

  • Your main job this month will be sowing and planting (more on that below!)
  • Don’t forget to protect any early seed sowings from slugs and other pests and be mindful of late frosts too.
  • Cut autumn fruiting raspberry canes back to ground level.
  • This is your last chance to prune many of your fruit trees and bushes if you forgot to do so in January.
  • If you’re lucky enough to have a greenhouse give it a good tidy up, in the coming weeks you will be able to start sowing your first seeds and these will appreciate the warmth of a (tidy) greenhouse.
  • You’ll also want to get started with weeding, a fun job that will continue right through to summer.
  • You will also want to start feeding any fruit trees or bushes and other vegetable crops that have lasted through the winter.

Sow now

If you like to sow your seeds outdoors, you can get away with sowing a wide range of veggies in light soil, including: broad beans, carrots, parsnips, beetroot, onions, lettuces, radish, peas, spinach, summer cabbage, salad leaves, leeks, Swiss chard, kohl rabi, turnip and summer cauliflower.

In greenhouses or indoors you can sow peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, aubergines and salad leaves.

Plant now

Cranberries and lingonberries can be planted this month along with cold-stored strawberry runners.

Onions, shallots and garlic can go in the ground too. As can asparagus crowns.

Harvest now

If you’ve kept growing over winter then the following should be ready to harvest:
