This Vegan Caprese salad is a simple combination of tomato, basil and a plant based mozzarella. It's an elegant dish that can be made even more special by making your mozzarella from scratch. Find out more below.

What is a Caprese Salad?

A Caprese Salad is an Italian dish that is made up of slices of tomato, mozzarella and basil. It is seasoned simply with salt and olive oil though you may sometimes see it served with a drizzle of balsamic vinegar.

This classic Italian dish is said to resemble the colours of the Italian flag.

How to make a vegan Caprese Salad (with home made mozzarella)

Really this recipe is just an assembly job. Simply cut your tomatoes into thin slices, do the same with your vegan mozzarella and then layer one by one with leaves of sweet basil.

How to make vegan mozzarella

Making your own mozzarella is a fun process that requires a couple of specialist ingredients (like tapioca starch and agar powder). It is a little involved and so I've created a whole post detailing the process. You can find my vegan mozzarella recipe here.

Of course you could still use store bought vegan mozzarella which would work just as well.
