Back in the early days of the blog I was on a bit of a health kick. I had latched on to the idea of juice diets and smoothie detoxes as a way of getting more fruit into my diet and losing a bit of weight. I loved food too much to commit to replacing lunch or dinner with just a drink but I started whizzing up a smoothie for breakfast each day.
I no longer worry so much about my weight or feel the need to skip or liquify my meals but I do still love a smoothie whether it’s made from tropical flavours or a more savoury mix of wheat grass and veggies. Green smoothies do have their place but right now I much prefer the bright pink kind!
A healthy way to start the day
Weight loss aside, there are lots of benefits of including lots of fruit and oats in your breakfast. What’s the point in having a smoothie if by 11am you’re starving hungry again – you’ll just start snacking! With this in mind I’ve added rolled oats which are full of slow release energy and plenty of fibre for a healthy gut.
The raspberries contain antioxidants such as vitamin C, quercetin and gallic acid. Some research even suggests that raspberries are good for your memory too!
Another fruit packed into this smoothie is the humble banana. Bananas are also jam full of vitamins and minerals such as vitamin B6, manganese, potassium, protein, magnesium and folate to name just a few!
To top it all off (and to give the smoothie the perfect consistency) I’ve also added fresh orange juice. Opt for fresh over concentrated orange juice and you’ll get the benefit of key digestive enzymes. But, if you don’t have the time to squeeze a fresh orange every day orange juice from concentrate will do just fine.
With this much fibre and fruit in your first meal of the day, it can’t be a bad thing can it? What’s more, this tastes delicious!

I can't stand the thought of this for breakfast! No protein, mostly sugar, I'd be starving again in half an hour haha.If it works for you, though, then great 😀
See I can't stand anything to heavy! The most I cand stand in the morning is fruit and sometimes a small bowl of porridge. This is somewhere in between :p
I love the color of this smoothie. I love drinking morning smoothies, especially if I have a full day ahead of me – filled with meetings, long trips and long hours of staring at the computer screen.Joseph Carr
It is nice to inject a bit of colour into life isn't it 🙂 I'm working on a mango smoothie now for a bit of sunshine 😀
I mostly make green smoothies, but I think I’m going to do more fruity ones for variety. I like to add oats too, it really does make a smoothie filling. Love your flavours.
Thanks Jacqui! I don’t have anything against green smoothies but I love adding oats to fruity ones 🙂 glad I’m not the only one!
Yummy! Gorgeous pics too xx
Thanks Emily! Was pretty happy with how they turned out 🙂
I’m totally with you! Much prefer fruity smoothies and also favour a banana base. The only green smoothies I enjoy are ones featuring matcha, not green vegetables! 😉
Ooooh I do love adding a bit of matcha to smoothies! Will have to do that more this year. Thanks for the suggestion. My matcha often ends up in cakes!
I’m a bit obsessed with smoothies at the moment and love putting oats in them. Haven’t tried using orange juice in them though so will definitely try it 🙂
I am getting more on board with them the more I drink. Who knows I may actually start liking smoothie bowls next! I think fresh juice makes all the difference in terms of flavour and texture of the drink. Definitely give it a go!
I’ve just jumped on the bandwagon! Second up (first was classic strawberry and banana) is mango, coconut milk and banana. Wish me luck! Haven’t tried oats yet but I think the coconut milk might fill me up enough x
Hi Helen
They sound delicious! Ive got Mango smoothie on here somewhere and a blueberry and coconut one. Make sure you take a look around 🙂
