What’s in a snowball cocktail?
A “Snowball” is a retro cocktail that has been around for decades. It’s made from advocaat, lemonade, a splash of lime cordial and ice. When shaken together it makes a rich, frothy cocktail that is the perfect way celebrate the festive season.
The “Snowflake” cocktail is it’s boozy cousin made with prosecco instead of lemonade.
How do you make a vegan snowball?
The only ingredient in a classic Snowball cocktail is the advocaat. Advocaat is a traditional Dutch alcoholic beverage made from eggs, sugar, and brandy.
It has a consistency not dissimilar to custard and makes the snowball cocktail velvety smooth with a frothy top. In the US eggnog is a good substitute as its made with many of the same ingredients.
The most well known brand of advocaat in the UK is Warnicks. Unfortunately they don’t yet make a vegan version.
What’s Oatnog?
Oatnog is a vegan alternative to eggnog or advocaat. It’s made from oat milk, coconut, nutmeg, cinnamon, vanilla and rum.
Oatnog can be served hot or cold. The makers suggest shaking the bottle well and pouring it over ice into a rocks glass before garnishing with ground nutmeg.
I prefer it gently warmed through or mixed into a Vegan Snowball Cocktail!
Where can I buy Oatnog?
You can order Oatnog from Blank Lines Drinks.
The Recipe
Making a snowball is incredibly simple. I do find the Oatnog separates from the lemonade a little if you let it sit for a white, just keep a straw to hand or a cocktail stick with maraschino cherries to give it a good stir if you need to.
