The Vegan Birthday Cake Martini is a fun twist on a classic cocktail made with plant based ingredients.

Birthday celebrations

Every birthday requires a celebration, no matter what the age and no matter how big or small that celebration might be. The two key components to my birthday celebrations? They are cake and cocktails, two things that have become synonymous with my blog.

When I turned vegan I was shocked at just how many types of alcohol weren't vegan. Some of my favourite cocktails were now off limits - particularly those including egg whites, cream or milk. The birthday cake martini was one such cocktail. It's ordinarily made with white chocolate liqueur, cream (or milk), amaretto and vodka. Whilst amaretto and vodka are suitable for vegans, the other two ingredients usually are not.

But, with plant milks now readily available and having discovered a vegan white chocolate liqueur, I'm pleased to say you two can enjoy a Vegan Birthday Cake Martini at your next celebration!

Vegan Birthday Cake Martini

What is a birthday cake martini?

A birthday cake martini is simply a cocktail that is said to taste like birthday cake. This is a "vegan" birthday cake martini because it's made entirely of plant based ingredients.

How does a Vegan Birthday Cake Martini get its "birthday cake" flavour?

The mix of nutty amaretto, rich cream and the sweet yet buttery white chocolate liqueur is the perfect combination to remind you of cake!

The vegan white chocolate liqueur I use is Bicerin - White Chocolate Liqueur.

As for plant milks, I've tried this recipe with both oat milk and almond milk and they both work really well.

How do you make a birthday cake martini?

This is one of those recipes that is oh so simple. Just add the ingredients to a cocktail shaker with some ice and give it a good shake. I prefer to use a plant milk instead of cream for this recipe as you don't risk the cream whipping when you shake it which could lead to a coagulated lumpy mess. (Yuck!)

Once mixed simply strain into a glass.

Really it is a simple drink that is a little bit boozy (the vodka is really only there to make it a little stronger) and oh so tasty!

How do you get the sprinkles to stick to the glass?

Although not essential, the sprinkles around the rim of the glass has become synonymous with birthday cake martinis such as this.

To get this effect simply dip the rim of your glass in simple syrup (or another sticky substance like maple syrup). I usually pour it on to a plate first. Make sure you don't have any excess on the rim as this will cause drips.

Next, dip the glass into sprinkles (which have also been poured on to a plate). Give it a good wiggle in the sprinkles and gently push them on to the rim if needed. They will then stick firm in position. (They also taste good too!)

How to garnish a Vegan Birthday Cake Martini

Again, although not essential, I like to add a couple of edible flowers as an extra garnish. Just because.
