White Wine Sangria (Sangria Blanca)

White Wine Sangria (Sangria Blanca)

From the Spanish word for ‘bloodletting’, a good Sangria cocktail recipe bleeds flavour thanks to its base of delicious wine, with added fresh fruit and juices. Find out my twist on this classic summer cocktail below. This post was sponsored by thebar.com.

The original

Sangria has a reputation as a full-bodied cocktail, made with a red wine base that is light and spicy in texture and taste. Considering Sangria means ‘bloodletting’ it’s no surprise that it almost always starts with a bottle of red, just like this classic Sangria recipe on thebar.com.

But, it doesn’t have to!

The original Sangria cocktail has its roots in ‘Sangaree’, a red wine, citrus and sugar cocktail which dates from at least 1736. A line in The Gentleman’s Magazine mentions “a punch seller in the Strand [who] had devised a new punch made of strong Madeira wine and called sangre”.

The drink then travelled the world on merchant ships, to the Caribbean, and then on to the US, where it died under prohibition, but emerged again as ‘Sangria’ in the early ’60s.

My twist on a classic

There have been lots of variations of Sangria over the years. In fact, famous bartender Angelo Vieira created a Sangria Martini by adding raspberry liqueur and apple schnapps, then serving it in a coupe. My twist on the original Sangria isn’t quite as bold but it is still delicious.

I’m much more of a white wine girl than a red (though it wasn’t always that way). Come summer I like to make a big jug of White Wine Sangria (or Sangria Blanca) which can be shared with friends while soaking up the sun.

I start with a bottle of Blossom Hill Pinot Grigio. From this delicious white wine you’ll get aromas of passion fruit and citrus . I think peaches also work well and so instead of spiking my white wine sangria with Grand Marnier I use Archers Peach Schnapps.

If you’re looking for a little extra fizz and sparkle you can make this cocktail longer by adding soda water but I like it as it is with a few ice cubes to stay cool.

Added Extras

Although I’ve used raspberries, strawberries, lemons and limes, you can add any combination of fruit you like. Think blueberries, oranges, apple slices, berries, pineapple, grapes, melon, kiwi or even mango. In other words, pretty much whatever you have to hand! To sweeten it up you can use a simple sugar syrup, sugar or honey. If you don’t like peach schnapps, add another spirit of your choice. It’s up to you.
